PRAY Builder Tool
The PRAY Builder tool helps create PRAY files on Windows.

PRAY is the file format used for installing new agents, breeds and rooms. This version, v0.102, supports generation of compressed agent files using the --compress option.

This tool allows you to view/edit c16 and s16 image files.

The SpriteBuilder is the offical Creature Labs sprite handling tool, and was used throughout the creation of Creatures 3 and Docking Station.

It does not create images, there are many good paint packages on the market that fulfil that job already, it simply takes existing images and turns them into the right format for our engine.

With this tool you can cut-and-paste from your favourite art package and make the sprite files necessary for creating agents and creatures. This tool is also ideal for obtaining images used in-game and creating your own images from them - possible uses include animated GIFs, wallpaper, webpage backgrounds etc.

Features include:
•Can handle both .s16 and .c16 format
•Batch convert to .s16 or .c16
•Automatic and Manual Cut facilities - speeds up cutting multiple images from a sprite sheet
•Automatic Uncut - turns a sprite file into a single image with all the separate frames on them

This command line program will compare two different C3/DS genomes and create a list of all the differences between them. Instructions for those who have never used command line applications can be found below:


Downloading and using Gendiff:
•Download the executable to your computer
•Create a directory called "Gendiff" in your "Program Files" directory on your C: drive and copy the gendiff application to the folder. Also put a copy of the gen files you wish to compare in the directory.

This CAOS code debugger lets you browse running agents, inspect their variables and step through code as they run it. Also monitor output from DBG: OUTV and DBG: OUTS and more! As used by Creature Labs developers.

Installation: Download CAOSDebugger.1.25.zip. Unzip the file and copy the folder wherever you like. Double click on CAOSDebugger.1.25.exe to start the debugger.

Monitor window: Choose View|Monitor to turn on the text console monitor. In the game, use the commands DBG: OUTV and DBG: OUTS to send data to that window. This is very useful for debugging agents - you can make them print output saying what they are doing.

Debug menu/toolbar: This lets you pause and single step the whole game. Driving the game from the debugger means that instead of using its own internal ticks, the debugger will make the game tick. This guarantees that all debugger windows are updated every tick, rather than polled occasionally as they would otherwise be.

Agent menu: The main part of the debugger window shows all the agents in the world at the moment. They are organized in a tree view by classifier. The last node is the unique id (see UNID and AGNT commands) of the agent. You can select that, and then choose options on the Agent menu to act on it. Double click on an agent to open a watch window on it.

Global/hot watch windows: These can be opened from the Watch menu. The global watch window is used for viewing variables and data not specific to one agent. The hot watch window uses the HOTS command to let you view variables and data for the agent the hand is currently pointing at.

Watch windows: All watch Windows work the same. You can right click to add or edit the watches. Each watch is simply a chunk of CAOS code which is executed periodically. Use the OUTV and OUTS commands to print data to the watch output field.

Agent watch windows: When watching an agent, a source code view is shown on the right hand side of the watch window. If the agent is in a script the code is displayed, with the next line to run highlighted. Each agent runs at least 5 instructions per tick, or more if in an INST. This makes it quite hard to see what is going on when single stepping the game tick by tick. For more detail, right click and choose Follow agent's code. The whole game will pause next time that agent runs a script, and you can single step through the script, using the toolbar buttons on the main debug window.

Customization: You will see some files with names like 0.0.0.always.txt and Creatures 3/global.optional.txt. These let you customize a set of default watch variables, and a set which appear in the watch window right button context menu. You can make new customization files following the pattern G/X.Y.txt, and you can edit the existing ones.

global watches appear in the global watch window. Those named after a classifier appear when debugging agents of that classifier - for example 0.0.0 will make the watch appear for all agents, 4.0.0 would be for all Creatures.

always watches appear in a watch window immediately, whereas optional ones appear in the context menu for you to add.

Files in the same folder as the debugger executable appear for all games, those in a sub folder named after the game will appear only for that game. You may want a Docking Station and a Creatures 3 folder.

If you make a cool set of files with lots of watches, do post them for others in the CDN news group!

Known bug: If you move the splitter bar in the middle of an agent watch window, the CAOS debugger often crashes.

Dumps a list of tags within a set of catalogue files.

This is a command line tool which dumps a list of tags and count of the number of items in them from a set of catalogue files. You can select the language to use, and specify auxiliary catalogue directories.

The program was used in the Creatures 3 and Docking Station build scripts to check each language had everything translated. There's a readme file in the zip file which explains more, with the code fragment from the Docking Station build script which used it.

This tool is a professional quality tool that allows you to do all things CAOS related.

It is fully syntax aware and will not allow you to inject anything that is incorrect, but rather than just blindly stopping you it lets you know what the problem is and what was expected - which makes tracking the problem a doddle! All COS files when opened in this tool will be formated and colour coded for easier viewing.

It features the ability to inject the whole COS file; just the install script; just the event scripts or just the remove script. This makes it easier to keep your code for one object in just the one file and speeds up development time.

Other features include: •Block comment/uncomment
•Block indent/outdent
•Find and replace
•Undo and redo
•Script output - for one line injections and interrogation of an object in the world
•Error output - for when an error is detected in a COS file
•Full scriptorium control - allows you to view the scripts stored in the game already, and manage them

The Map Editor is a highly graphical tool that allows you to create new metarooms (the name for the distinct areas of the ship - for example the Norn Meso, the Workshop, the Jungle Terrarium etc) or alter existing ones. You can take any image you have made and turn it into the basis for a new room system. Simply create the image and draw the individual rooms on the map with the Map Editor!

The Map Editor is designed to allow you to create both expansion rooms - rooms that will add onto your DS/C3/CIE world - and also complete new room systems to override the originals.

Product Features
Advanced features of the Map Editor include the ability to alter and edit the cellular Automata (CA) system that powers the environment within Creatures 3 and Docking Station. The CA system is responsible for dictating how the smells spread around the world - how fast heat dissipates - how moisture moves from room to room - and many other factors too.

Other features include:
•graphical multi-document interface means you can work on more than one room system at a time
•creates background image files from BMPs click and drag to create rooms and metarooms

CAOS syntax highlighting and injection in VIM
We provide a syntax highlighting file for the text editor VIM. Under Linux you can also use this to inject CAOS commands.

Download and extract the file vimcaos.tar.gz. It contains full instructions for setting up the syntax highlighting and one-key injection from VIM under Linux.

Linux console utilities
A collection of external applications written in Bash script, to monitor, debug and control the Creatures Engine while it is running.

monitor - Run this to output log messages from the game engine. In agents, use the commands DBG: OUTS and DBG: OUTV to make the messages.

minicaos - This gives you a CAOS command line on the console.

debugger - Prototype debugger, not very functional, but useful as an example and to show the kinds of things that can be done.

Tina Hirsch has written an excellent utility called easyPRAY. It runs on Windows and Linux, and gives a nice graphical environment for converting a COS file, sprites and sounds into an agent file.

Want to know what's inside an .agent or .creature file? Here's how to find out. Gavin Lambert has written a fantastic utility REVELATION which can decompress a PRAY file into its component parts. For Windows or Linux, find it on the Mirality Systems web site. It even works for Sea Monkeys.

A tool for creating S16 sprite files - essential for making new objects for distribution as COBs.

The Sprite Workshop allows cut-and-paste from paint packages as well as an Import function for converting BMP's. The Import combined with the built-in Expand functions means it has never been easier to make a multiple image sprite file.

Sprite Workshop can handle both 5-5-5 and 5-6-5 format sprite files as well as Creatures 1 SPR files.

Make your own COBs with this complier - 319K download.

This compiler has been written to allow you to create your own agent files for Creatures 2. The agent files (also known as COBs) are simplified ways of exchanging agents with others whilst ensuring that all the resources necessary for the agents' correct operation are also transferred. The agent files provide a method of transferring all agent-related resources in a single file, including all the sounds and images used by the agent.

The COB Compiler supports the COS format and will automatically identify your installation, event script and removal chunks and also produces a list of files you need to include in the COB to allow others to use it. It fully supports the COB format allowing multiple agent chunks (more than one object per COB) and the author chunk.

The COB Compiler can also decompile a COB into it's constituent COS, WAV and S16 files for you.

The Attachment Editor allows graphical viewing and editing of Creatures attachment data.

Attachment data is needed to state where on the body a limb joins, for example, so with this tool it is easy to create a whole new creature graphic set and mark the points of attachment.

The tool is fully graphical and has the ability to create 'snapshots' of creatures for use on webpages, stories, artwork etc.

Creatures 2 CAOS Tool
The C2 CAOS tool is a professional quality product - all of the Creatures 2 agents were built by CLabs' Agent Engineers using it!

What is CAOS?
CAOS stands for "Creatures Agent/Object Scripting." The CAOS tool is a stand-alone application developed by CyberLife Technology Ltd and was used to create all the scripts for the objects in Creatures 2. In summary, CAOS is used for the following:
• Creating and editing COS files in a syntax-aware editor
• Injecting scripts into the game in real-time while the game is running
• Viewing, navigating and manipulating the game's script library (the so-called "Scriptorium")

CAOS is designed in such a way that the interface is friendly to use. There are several different ways of performing the same action, so you are free to choose the one that you prefer. All possible actions may be performed using the application's menu bar. However, many of these actions may also be performed using the toolbar or via keyboard shortcuts.

Key features of the CAOS Tool include:
•Full Scriptorium control - allows you to easily view, add, remove and edit any script stored inside the game
• Full COS control - opening, saving and editing COS files in a colour-coded, syntax-aware environment. No more syntax errors!
• Multiple COS windows - have as many files open as you like. Use Cut and Paste to easily create new scripts from existing sources
